The Chief Student Services Officer/Vice President of Student Services (CSSO/VPSS) serves as a pivotal member of the Executive Leadership team at Jackson College and is responsible for providing visionary and strategic direction for all aspects of student services.
The CSSO/VPSS oversees a broad portfolio that encompasses enrollment management, student engagement, academic advising, student navigator advising, financial aid, and other student-related services.
The role is crucial for creating a supportive and inclusive student environment that promotes success, engagement, and well-being.
Essential Functions Essential Duties and Responsibilities: · Focus Areas - Provides leadership for ensuring that the College provides a comprehensive array of student services, student development programs focused on student success, and enrollment management programs, including, but not limited to, admissions, advising, career planning and placement, recruiting and retention, registration and records, student discipline, student activities, intramural programs, student advocacy, services for students with special needs, cultural activities, student residence life, and other student support services and programs; · Policy Guidance - Recommends, develops and implements student services policies, procedures and practices which foster and promote student learning and student completion, and which support the educational programs of the College in partnership with the Chief Academic Officer.
The position also recommends organizational structures, personnel and resources to ensure a student-centered / learner-centered environment at all levels; · Student Activities – Oversees College’s athletic program and supports College activities and special events through attendance and/or participation; · Strategic Leadership - Collaborate with the President and the Leadership Council in shaping and executing the institution’s strategic vision and initiatives related to student services; · Enrollment Management - Oversees the admissions, registration, and retention processes, aligning them with the college’s strategic objectives; · Student Engagement and Success - Develop and implement student engagement programs, including extracurricular activities, student government, the summer bridge program, the multicultural center, the international student institute, the center for veteran affairs, the center for student success, the mental health clinic, the health clinic, student residence life, as well as special events that contribute to a vibrant student life; · Advising and Student Success Navigation - Oversee the Academic Advising to ensure students receive appropriate guidance on academic and life matters; · Financial Aid and Scholarships - Oversee the Office of Financial Aid, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations while maximizing the availability of financial aid for eligible students; · Budget and Resource Management - Develop and oversee the departmental budget, ensuring efficient and effective allocation of resources; · Compliance and Risk Management- Ensure that all activities within the Student Services division comply with relevant laws, regulations, and College policies; · Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion - Foster a culture that values diversity and inclusivity, implementing initiatives that support underrepresented and marginalized student populations; · Data-Driven Decision-Making - Utilize analytics and other data sources to monitor student trends, assess the effectiveness of services, and inform strategic decisions; · Community Partnerships - Establish and maintain relationships with community organizations, schools, and other stakeholders to enhance student services and community engagement.
· Student Residence Life – Oversees operations of Student Residence Life and Residence Facilities.
Minimum Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: · Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field from an accredited institution.
· Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in student services, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership role.
· Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budget management, and program development.
· Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Preferred Qualifications: · Doctorate degree in a relevant field.
· Prior experience in a community college setting.
· Familiarity with Michigan higher education regulations and policies.
· Strong interpersonal and community relations skills.
