TRUCK DRIVER / ROAD MAINTENANCE - JCDOT

We have several driver positions available for a variety of driver/road maintenance activities including: Operate trucks, various pieces of equipment, hand tools, and perform manual labor to repair, maintain, or construct assigned state, primary and secondary roads and rights-of-way under the responsibility of the Department of Transportation.
Performs road maintenance duties, including facility, grounds maintenance, minor tool, equipment, and vehicle repair and cab cleaning.
*RESPONSIBILITIES:* Operates equipment in a safe manner.
Ensures that equipment is in proper working condition and maintains a safe and positive image of the Department with the public.
Maintains various records detailing work activities for the preparation of related reports.
Additional essential functions include but are not limited to: 1.
Plows snow and ice from roads and floats slush off with under blade and front plow, wing plows.
Must be available in a variety of weather conditions.
Hauls and spreads salt, chloride, or sand on roads to remove snow or ice.
Regulates amount spread in accordance with instructions.
Maintains records of materials used.
2.
Removes underbody blade from truck; replaces blade and installs on truck.
3.
Digs trenches with shovel to locate utilities.
Installs tile lines and catch basins.
Places straw matting, silt fences and other soil erosion control items.
4.
Shovels hot or cold patch off of trucks into pot holes.
5.
Uses truck with under blade to keep shoulders of paved roads smooth and even with edge of pavement.
6.
Hauls supplies such as sand, stone, gravel, and asphalt for road construction, catch basin building and repair, hole patching, crack seal, and seal coat operations.
7.
Hauls other materials for use in repairing paved and gravel roads such as gravel and tubes, filling holes, and repairing washouts.
8.
Drives truck with under blade to haul, spread, and level dirt or gravel to fill holes and maintain roads in good condition.
Regulates height and angle of blade with levers inside truck cab.
9.
Operates chain saw, stump cutter, chipper and other related equipment to remove and/or trim fallen and existing trees and brush.
Manually lifts branches, logs, brush, stumps etc.
, to maintain right of way or for road construction.
10.
Pulls trailer to deliver, unload and operate equipment at work site; flags traffic.
11.
Operates a variety of other equipment such as concrete saw, air compressor and hammer, etc.
12.
Serves as part of a crew to install, maintain and repair road signs, delineator posts and buttons, guardrail, right of way fencing, etc.
13.
Completes pre- and post-inspections on equipment.
Performs minor and major maintenance to vehicles and equipment.
Reports problems to immediate supervisor for appropriate action.
14.
Keeps vehicles, equipment, and buildings clean, orderly and stored with necessary tools and supplies.
15.
Records materials, parts and supplies used and time and equipment expended for each work project for proper billing or recordkeeping.
*POSITION DESCRIPTION:* Primary schedule: 7 am to 3 pm, Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day; paid lunch and breaks Summer schedule: 6 am to 4 pm, Monday through Thursday, 10 hours per day; paid lunch and breaks LABOR GROUP II, III AND IV DEFINITION AND CDL REQUIREMENTS: Labor Group II: Includes all truck & snow plow drivers (including front-end loaders).
CDL-B required.
Labor Group III and IV: Includes heavy equipment operation.
CDL-A required.
Work requires a level of knowledge of reading, writing, and arithmetic normally attained in several years of high school.
Up to six months of maintenance/construction experience involving related truck driving and equipment operation desired.
Possession of a valid Michigan Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL-B minimum; CDL-A preferred) which involves the successful completion of the required physical examination and drug screening.
*PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:* This job requires the ability to perform the essential functions contained in this description.

*FULL-TIME; INSURANCE BENEFITS EFFECTIVE DATE OF HIRE* This is a full-time, non-exempt, bargaining unit position with the Independent Union of Operating Engineers offering excellent health benefits effective date of hire.
Other benefits (PTO, holiday) effective following 90 days of employment.

*ADDITIONAL EARNING OPPORTUNITIES:* - A minimun of 2 hours pay per 24 hour period when assigned to "On-Call/Standby" duties - $1.
00 per hour shift premium when assigned to duty after normal defined work hours - $.
25 per hour when assigned to assist in vehicle maintenance or fabrication activities - $.
10 per hour for each additional Certification (Labor Group III & IV) - $.
20 per hour for each additional Certified Trainer endorsement (Labor Group III & IV) - $200 annual clothing allowance - $150 annual or $300 bi-annual ANSI approved safety boot allowance \*\* The above is applicable to the terms of the Independent Union of Operating Engineers Collective Bargaining Agreement (fka "Road Workers Association").
